Tom Queally and Henry Cecil started a great weekend of racing with Manifest’s fantastic eight lengths win in the Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup. The quick ground at York Racecourse played havoc with the field, leaving race favourite Kite Wood – as well as Clowance and Furmigadelagiusta – as a non-runner due to risky conditions.
However, even if the field had started at the Yorkshire Cup in its original formation, Manifest’s performance was so consequent and authoritative that there is no doubt he would have triumphed anyhow. Manifest, who had a slow start to his professional career, pulled out all the stops for jockey Tom Queally when he started in the Yorkshirs Cup on Friday 14th May. After suffering a defeat on the hands of the prolific Harbinger last month, it seems Manifest had made up his mind that it was now his time for glory.
The four –year-old was followed by Luca Cumani’s star pupil Purple Moon under the guidance of Kieren Fallon. Although they came in a whopping eight lengths after Manifest, Cumani and Fallon were far from disappointed. Purple Moon gave a valiant chase and performed well under the difficult circumstances – which paradoxically seemed to make Manifest blossom in action. Wajir, who was the sole contender to represent for trainer Saeed Bin Suroor after Kite Wood was pulled from the race, did his connections proud when he ran to third place, 3 ¾ lengths behind Purple Moon.
Henry Cecil, trainer of Manifest, is now excitedly planning his charge entry in this year’s Gold Cup at the Royal Ascot Festival. Although his confidence into Manifest does not seem unshakeable, Cecil hopes that the right preparation and the slowly emerging talent of the four-year-old will make for a winning combination at one of the biggest flat racing events of the British season.
